Office lifestyle vs staying healthy - big tips which take little efforts

It has been almost a year now since I joined the corporate lifestyle - conducting office type tasks and living the 9 to 5 life. Although, working from home for the corporation feels indeed different than it could be while living in "before Corona times" (ex. going to office each day), sitting at the desc for most of the day and watching the screen is still the biggest part of a daily routine. In such circumstance, it is a matter of *rather short* time for effects of such type of lifestyle to appear. Hence, it is important to take actions straight away before such things as back pain, wrists cracking, dry eyes or other discomforts appear.

Here are few tips which take little efforts but definitely bring bigger benefits to our bodies, while having an "office lifestyle":

  • do 10-15 minutes of physical practice before starting the day of work (it is not much of an extra time - say it's not a big deal to wake up like 10 min. earlier or do a short workout while your computer is logging in to the systems) - stretch, windmills, hops or planks - doesn't really mater which exercise suits you, what matters, is to wake up the body and get the blood flowing before you ground into your chair for the next 8h of work;

  • take your eyes off the screen every hour for at least a few minutes (for example, when something is loading on your computer - consider this few waiting seconds as a time for your eyes to have rest);

  • stretch your body while sitting at the desc - wrists, head, shoulders, side body stretch are all simple movements which bring loads of ease to the body while you don't even need to stand up from your chair;

  • take yourself out for a walk/ to get some fresh air, even for short 5-15 minutes of time - on the balcony or outside, during lunch break or after work - doesn't matter when and where but really matters to do it, as breathing some air will help you to unwind and be more "fresh" and productive in next couple of hours;

From my personal experience, since starting an office lifestyle, I got inspired to offer yoga classes for employees of my company, in order to motivate people to keep themselves happy and healthy at work right at their desks. As one could imagine, welcoming of such idea was not as warm as I could wish for, as corporate companies are mostly target oriented and unfortunately there are many of them which do not yet have place for such things as yoga in their business culture, even if we try to connect it with wellbeing of employees which will further influence and improve the productivity. However, we managed to agree on 15 minutes yoga sessions via Zoom, happening every 2 weeks, and I consider it as a win for the beginning 🙂Our 15 min yoga refresh sessions do not require any specific equipment, yoga mats or sports cloth. Everything what's needed is a wish, a chair and an access to Zoom. My hope is to see bigger care and engagement from corporate companies in terms of the wellbeing of employees. And for now, I am hoping this article gave you few hints on how to take bigger care of yourself in your daily routine. Be generous to yourself and take small actions for bigger cause of what's vital - your health.
